Dear Colleagues,

Some of you may already know that the President and members of the Executive Committee of the Turkish Medical Association (TMA) were detained last Tuesday, 30 January, after publicly voicing opposition to military offensives, citing a desire to curb the “physical, psychological, social and environmental health problems” caused by continued military conflict. The President and the Secretary General of the TMA are both psychiatrists and served as members of the Executive Committee of the Psychiatric Association of Turkey (PAT), which is an EPA National Society Member. Shortly after the arrest, the PAT made an announcement "stating that declaring thoughts should not be a legal guilt and inviting authorities to release them urgently".

Yesterday, 31 January, the EPA President, Prof. Silvana Galderisi, addressed a letter, on behalf of the EPA Executive Committee, to the President of the PAT, expressing her sympathy to colleagues in the TMA, and her readiness to assist in initiatives undertaken in support of Turkish psychiatrists and medical doctors. Please find her letter attached.

The EPA also fully supported the statement issued by the World Medical Association (WMA), which “expressed its grave concern” over the arrests of leaders of the TMA. A link to the WMA’s statement is available on the EPA website

In my capacity as Chair of the EPA Council of NPAs and on behalf of the Council Steering Committee, I would like to join the EPA President in expressing our sincere sympathy and readiness for support to the TMA colleagues who are in detention. We hope that they will be released very soon.

With best regards,
Prof. Tamas Kurimay
Chair of the EPA Council of NPAs
